Ishquoh Lyrics

Ideas for a site-responsive performance scored for six children and cello on abandoned railroad tracks in Issaquah.

I
Cello Prelude

II
Where is the sound?
(sounds of Issaquah)
Quoh.

III
Cello interlude

IV
Tell me how to go...

Walk 10,000 steps
to reach the water
that flows off the mountain.

Choose 10,000 rocks
to make a pathway
that circles the fire.

Tell me how to go.
I know how to go.

Grow 10,000 trees
then hear the birdcall
that quiets the forest.

Go 10,000 years
to find the children
who look up with wonder.

V
Cedar Interlude

VI
Ishquoh flying from the...
Ishquoh soaring through the...
Ishquoh falling from the milky way,
I wish upon a star.

VI
There is a sound called Ishquoh
that I first heard in the Spring.
I have to hear this sound again
to remind me why I sing.
Oh Ishquoh, please tell me,
Ishquoh, are you home?

There is a sound called Ishquoh
and it's when a bird takes flight.
I have to hear this sound to know
that the world will be all right.
Oh Ishquoh, please tell me,
Ishquoh, are you home?

I ran through the smoke.
I traveled too far.
I ran past the growling of car after car.

I lifted my fists.
I punched at the air.
I yelled, "This is not fair. I dare
you to stop me as I run away
to the clearing of cedar
that's been set aflame."

There is a sound called Ishquoh
that will fill my face with shame.
If I don't hear these birds then I
know that we have lost the game.
Oh Ishquoh, please tell me,
Ishquoh, are you home?
