America's Talent

Last Wednesday and Thursday night, I watched NBC's America's Got Talent and saw an America I thought only existed at Disneyland. A boy played the harmonica while his brother rocked out. A girl with pig-tails yodeled accompanied by dancing cowboys. A clogging boy band performed with marching band percussionists. A family fiddled while doing Irish step dances. A white girl sang her heart out while barefoot.

America's Got Talent is a television show that has it's precedent in the vaudeville acts of the early 20th century. Singers, jugglers, magicians, and other performers had five minutes to "wow" an audience.
