July 4-16, 2017, I collaborate with playwright Eugenie Chan on The Chan Family Picnic, a nouvelle vaudeville prompted by her grandfather Gumdock Chan's medical school letters and other documents from the 1920's.

I started the residency by playing through racist popular songs from the era. Eugenie overhauled the existing script to become more vaudeville and clarified certain characters I was curious about such as Thomas. We were also inspired by the other Ground Floor projects chosen by Berkeley Rep.

Eight or so new song later, we rehearsed with a wonderfully skilled and playful group of performers who sang, danced, did magic tricks, and more. Thanks Berkeley Rep for this amazing summer residency lab to develop new theater.
